Abstract

One of the most pernicious problems within an RDBMS, like SQL Server or Azure SQL, are deadlocks. Deadlocks are a condition where two or more users vie for locks on resources exclusively locked by the other user at the same time. Because none of the users are willing to give up their exclusive locks and they all want exclusive locks on the other resources, no one wins. Even worse is that SQL Server must choose one of the user processes to kill in order to break the deadlock.

Deadlocks are often caused by poor index design or inattention to coding best practices. The good news is that deadlocks are easy to find and, once you know about them, easy to fix.
